Hardik Patel moves to Supreme
Court .
On Monday Congress leader Hardik
Patel moved to the Supreme Court for challenging the order of Gujarat High Court about rejecting his plea to stay his conviction in the 2015 Mehsana rioting case. His
petition is likely to be mentioned on Tuesday due to urgent hearing and his
lawyers would seek stay of the March 29 order of the High Court because it is
encumber in the way of his contesting the Lok Sabha election. Hardik Patel had
started his preparations to contest the election from Jamnagar as a Congress
leader after joining the party on March 12 and the last date for filing of nominations is
April 4.
In August 2018 the high court suspended
the sentence but not the conviction. The Sessions Court of Visnagar in Mehsana district sentenced him to
two years' imprisonment last July for rioting and arson in Visnagar town during
the Patidar agnate which he lead in 2015. The Gujrat high Court also observed that the congress leader had
several criminal cases and 17 FIRs registered against him which is despite an
undertaking.Moreover the judge also account the number of pending cases against
the applicant across various courts before rejecting his plea.
